The Ukrainian president mentioned his meeting with Trump in September and noted that he appreciates his approach of "peace through strength."
“This is precisely the principle that can practically bring about a just peace in Ukraine. I hope we can realize this together. We eagerly anticipate an era of strong United States under the decisive leadership of President Trump,” Zelensky wrote.
He also expressed hope for robust bipartisan support for Ukraine in the U.S., labeling Ukraine as “one of the strongest military states in Europe, committed to ensuring long-term peace and security in Europe and the transatlantic community.”
“I look forward to the opportunity to personally congratulate President Trump and discuss ways to strengthen Ukraine's strategic partnership with the United States,” the head of state added.
Donald Trump has not publicly disclosed his plans regarding Ukraine, but he could not avoid questions about it during his campaign. The Republican has repeatedly stated that he will "end the war" if re-elected, without revealing how exactly he intends to do so.
Reuters reported that Trump's advisors presented a plan where, if re-elected, he would provide additional military assistance to Ukraine only if Kyiv agrees to negotiate with Moscow. Additionally, the presidential candidate has stated he would halt financial aid to Ukraine.
During a debate with Joe Biden on June 28, he called Putin's demands for the withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from occupied regions and Ukraine's refusal to join NATO "unacceptable." James DeVance, whom Trump selected as his vice-presidential candidate, voiced a contrary opinion.
During the debates with Kamala Harris, Trump was asked twice whether he wanted Ukraine to win the war against Russia. He responded twice that he wants it to stop and for people not to die. Harris, in turn, stated that Trump would simply abandon Ukraine within 24 hours of taking office.
Later, Trump publicly promised to "get out" of the war in Ukraine, as he believes Washington has "stuck" in it. “We need to get out. Biden says, ‘We won’t leave until we win.’ What will happen if they don’t win?” the Republican said.
