According to South Korean law, every man aged 18 and older is required to serve in the military for at least 18 months. When a 26-year-old resident of Seoul was first examined during the draft, he was deemed fit for service.
However, during the final medical examination, it was discovered that the man had gained weight—his weight exceeded 102 kilograms. As a result, the doctors considered him unfit for active duty, which allows him to serve in a non-combat position within the department.
Later, the court found the man guilty of attempting to evade mandatory military service. He was sentenced to one year of probation. His friend, who advised him to intentionally gain weight, was also punished with six months of probation.
He himself does not acknowledge his guilt and stated that he never thought his friend would agree to such a step.
