The head of PiS, Jarosław Kaczyński, explained that Navrocki was chosen primarily due to his personal traits, as well as because of “the situation Poland is currently facing”. According to the politician, there is now an “internal, Polish-Polish war” in the country, which is why he emphasized that the nation needs a trustworthy individual, regardless of political affiliation.
During his speech, Navrocki stressed the importance of defending Poland and its values, as well as “preventing the loss of our symbols and the limitation of our sovereignty”.
Karol Navrocki hails from Gdańsk. He is a historian and holds a PhD in humanities, and since 2021, he has been leading the Institute of National Remembrance in Poland. Prior to this, he managed the Museum of the Second World War in Gdańsk. He is known for initiating the dismantling of monuments dedicated to Soviet soldiers.
Recently, while commenting on the exhumation of victims of the Volhynia tragedy, he referred to Galicia as “Eastern Lesser Poland”. People’s Deputy and former head of the Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance, Volodymyr Vyatrovych, called this “regret for lost territories.”
The presidential elections in Poland are scheduled for May 2025. The election campaign is set to begin in January. Navrocki’s main opponent will be Rafał Trzaskowski, the mayor of Warsaw.
