Traffic congestion at the intersection of 9th Slobodskaya Street and Koval'skaya Street (Kuznetskaya Street) in Mykolaiv is caused by the street's overload.
This information was reported by the press service of the specialized municipal installation and operation enterprise of Mykolaiv.
The enterprise noted that complaints from residents about traffic jams at the intersection of 9th Slobodskaya and Koval'skaya Streets have started to appear in the media. Mykolaiv residents attribute the traffic jams to the road markings. The press service explained the reasons for the markings.
“Indeed, on October 25, 2024, a new traffic light system was activated at the intersection of Koval'skaya and 9th Slobodskaya Streets with the introduction of an updated road marking scheme. The need for such measures arose due to persistent delays in vehicle movement at this intersection in the secondary direction (along 9th Slobodskaya Street), especially during peak hours. Additionally, there have been regular traffic accidents at the intersection involving vehicle collisions.
As a result, after redistributing the width of the roadway between lanes and altering their number at the approaches to the intersection, it was possible to reroute traffic directions. Yes, at each approach, the right lane is designated for going straight and turning right. However, to ensure that the flow of vehicles turning right does not impede the main flow going straight, pedestrian crossings have been placed further from the intersection, creating a waiting area for pedestrians. This allows right-turning vehicles to stop without obstructing the straight-moving vehicles. The left lane is designated solely for left turns, meaning that vehicles waiting to turn left and yield to oncoming traffic will not hinder the straight-through movement at the intersection. Thus, the capacity for vehicles in the most congested direction has been increased,” the publication stated.
The press service also reported that following the implementation of new traffic lights and road markings, the situation at this intersection has improved.
“As the practical operation of the updated traffic light system at the intersection of Koval'skaya and 9th Slobodskaya Streets from October 25, 2024, to November 5, 2024, demonstrated, the situation at the intersection improved, and crossing the intersection in the secondary direction became much safer. Moreover, there were no delays in vehicle movement in the main direction during this period,” the publication indicated.
According to the representatives of the municipal enterprise, the issue of traffic jams arises due to the overload of Koval'skaya Street. Currently, repair work is being carried out on parallel streets, leading to their closure.
“The traffic congestion at this intersection occurred because the parallel Koval'skaya Street, leading from Bogoyavlensky Avenue towards the city center, is currently closed for traffic due to repair work on heat networks being performed by the Mykolaiv Thermal Power Plant. Additionally, traffic has also been restricted in the same direction on the parallel Igor Bedzai Street (Chkalova Street) due to work conducted by the municipal enterprise Mykolaivvodokanal.
The significant redirection of traffic from these streets has led to the overload of Koval'skaya Street. This is evidenced by traffic jams not only at the intersection with 9th Slobodskaya Street but also at the next regulated intersection with 6th Slobodskaya Street along the route from Bogoyavlensky Avenue,” the report stated.
Furthermore, to increase the capacity of the mentioned intersections, the enterprise representatives promised to implement temporary adjustments to the traffic light schedules to extend the green signal duration for traffic heading towards Kuznetskaya Street.
As previously reported, residents of Mykolaiv have complained about the new road markings in the city. In particular, citizens have expressed concerns about the markings at the “turbo roundabouts,” as well as at the intersections of 9th Slobodskaya and Kuznetskaya Streets and Kuznetskaya Street and Bogoyavlensky Avenue.
