Currently, the skies over Ukraine remain closed to civilian flights. This means that if the airspace is reopened, air travel with Iran will not resume.
It is worth noting that on September 9, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the temporary chargé d'affaires of Iran in Ukraine, Shahriar Amuzegar. He was warned in connection with reports of a possible supply of ballistic missiles from Tehran to Russia.
In May 2023, the Verkhovna Rada supported the introduction of sanctions against Iran for 50 years. Among various restrictions was the cessation of air travel.
As early as August, Reuters, citing sources in European intelligence, reported that Iran might supply Russia with hundreds of short-range Fath-360 ballistic missiles with satellite guidance.
In September, the Wall Street Journal, referencing European and American officials, stated that Iran had already sent short-range ballistic missiles to Russia. This occurred at a time when Russia intensified its missile strikes on Ukrainian cities and infrastructure.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine expressed deep concern over reports of the transfer of ballistic missiles from Iran to Russia and urged Iranian authorities to refrain from this.
The United States condemned the supply of ballistic missiles from Iran to Russia and imposed sanctions on the Iranian airline Iran Air, as well as on several companies and officials.
The governments of France, Germany, and the United Kingdom also condemned Iran's export of ballistic missiles to Russia. Specifically, these countries promised to take immediate measures to cancel bilateral agreements on air travel with Iran.
The United Kingdom also introduced new sanctions against Iran and Russia. In particular, the restrictions affected the Aerospace Forces of the Russian Armed Forces, the 924th State Center for Unmanned Aviation, and the command of the Russian military transport aviation.
The Iranian Foreign Ministry insists that Tehran has never been a part of the Russian-Ukrainian war and advocates for its political resolution.
