Donald Trump, who won the presidential election in the United States, is expected to seek an agreement with Russian President Vladimir Putin. However, his deal with the Kremlin leader is likely to not be in the interests of Europe and Ukraine.
As stated by Czech President Petr Pavel at the opening of the IISS Prague Defence Summit in Prague, Western assistance to Ukraine has been insufficiently swift. This has allowed the Russian army to advance across Ukrainian territory, writes Aktuality.sk.
"My point of view may be less politically correct, but I will say it anyway. From the very beginning, we have done too little. Only a few countries — and I am proud that among them was the Czech Republic — provided Ukraine with everything necessary and what we could offer. However, the start of military support was rather slow, and I honestly say that this slow assistance allowed Russia to advance in Ukrainian territory, despite all the problems they had with command and logistics at that time,” said Pavel.
According to him, this has led to the situation on the front being "somewhat stuck." However, it is now "developing more in favor of Russia than Ukraine." The Czech President emphasized that in such a situation, "it is difficult to encourage both sides to negotiate."
Pavel noted that many countries are now expecting changes from the future U.S. administration. Some anticipate that Donald Trump will fulfill his promise to end the war between Russia and Ukraine "within 24 hours." However, the Czech President does not believe this is possible. Moreover, in his opinion, Trump will attempt to reach an agreement with Putin.
However, Petr Pavel pointed out that such an agreement "will likely not serve the interests of Ukraine or Europe, as it will probably involve the transfer of part of the occupied territory of Ukraine to Russia or a condition for Ukraine that it cannot become a NATO member for at least 20 years."
The Czech leader added that any peace agreement, including one that involves temporary concessions of certain territories of Ukraine to Russia "until a diplomatic resolution is achieved in the future," should involve multiple parties. In particular, this includes China, India, and Europe.
As reported by "Telegraph," Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban stated that after the inauguration of the winner of the U.S. presidential election, Donald Trump, "Americans will pull out of the war" in Ukraine. Europe, on the other hand, will not be able to finance this war independently.
