Starmer is set to hold private talks with Biden at the G20 summit in Brazil next week. It is likely that he will also raise the issue of lifting restrictions for Ukraine on strikes deep into Russian territory using British Storm Shadow missiles.
The $20 billion that Starmer aims to secure for Ukraine is part of the American contribution to a $50 billion loan that G7 leaders agreed to provide to Kyiv back in June. The profits from the interest on the frozen assets of the Russian central bank are planned to be used as collateral for this loan.
According to U.S. reports, the $20 billion from the U.S. is expected to be provided by the end of the year.
An insider from the British government, who spoke with journalists, revealed that the UK is ready to "pressure" Biden to fulfill his promise of providing funds.
The publication also noted that the British Prime Minister had a 20-minute one-on-one conversation with French President Emmanuel Macron, which focused on Ukraine.
While he did not share further details, he stated that his country would "support Ukraine for as long as necessary, and we remain committed to this" and that Ukraine needs to be placed "in the best possible position."
"This has been my constant refrain over the past four months since I became Prime Minister, in all the discussions I have had. It is the core of the discussions we are having,” he said.
