According to agency sources, an announcement regarding the inclusion of JASSM missiles in the arms package for Ukraine is expected this fall. However, no final decision has been made yet. Ukraine will have to wait several months as the U.S. resolves technical issues before any delivery.
Officials stated that the supply of JASSM missiles to Ukraine could "significantly alter the strategic landscape of the conflict" and expand the strike zone within Russia.
Analysts suggested that the strike range of JASSM missiles could "push back" Russian footholds and depots located hundreds of kilometers beyond the front lines.
The launch of missiles near Ukraine's northern border with Russia could allow the Ukrainian Armed Forces to hit military targets in Voronezh and Bryansk, and to target airfields or naval installations in Crimea to the south.
"The JASSM missile could enable Ukraine to strike targets approximately 300 km into Russian territory, including at least 30 airbases, some of which Russia has used to launch attacks," the agency points out.
On November 17, the New York Times reported, citing American officials, that U.S. President Joe Biden authorized Ukrainian forces to use long-range ATACMS missiles to strike Russian territory. This was later written about by the Reuters news agency.
As explained by the agency's sources, the authorization for using ATACMS was a response to Russia's decision to involve North Korean troops in the war against Ukraine.
President Volodymyr Zelensky indirectly confirmed this information, noting that "the missiles will speak for themselves."
On November 20, media reports emerged that Ukraine had used French-British Storm Shadow cruise missiles for strikes on Russian territory for the first time, likely targeting the Kursk region.
The American Institute for the Study of War (ISW) believes that Storm Shadow missiles struck the command post of Russian and North Korean forces in the estate of the princes Baryatinsky near the village of Maryino. According to WSJ, during the strike, a North Korean general was injured.
On November 23, France granted Ukraine permission to conduct strikes on Russian territory using French long-range missiles.
