According to the Hungarian Foreign Minister, during Trump's presidency from 2016 to 2020, Hungarian-American political relations “were at their peak”, and dialogue and negotiations “were at the forefront of resolving conflicts that threaten global security”.
“After the decision of the American voters, we can hope that Hungarian-American political cooperation will return to its peak, as we share similar views on the world, illegal immigration, and family protection. And after nearly a thousand days of war in Ukraine, there are more chances than ever for establishing peace!” — Szijjártó wrote.
It’s worth noting that Donald Trump has already declared himself the winner of the U.S. elections, although the vote counting is still ongoing in some states.
Donald Trump has not publicly disclosed his plans regarding Ukraine; however, he could not avoid questions about it during his campaign. The Republican has repeatedly claimed that he would “end the war” if re-elected, without revealing what exactly he would do.
Reuters reported that Trump's advisors have presented a plan under which, if re-elected, he would provide additional military aid to Ukraine only if Kyiv agrees to negotiate with Moscow. Additionally, the U.S. presidential candidate has stated that he would halt financial aid to Ukraine.
During the debate with Joe Biden on June 28, he called Putin’s demands for the withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from occupied regions and Ukraine's refusal to join NATO “unacceptable.” James DeVance, whom Trump selected as his vice-presidential candidate, voiced an opposing opinion.
During the debates with Kamala Harris, Trump was asked twice whether he wanted Ukraine to win the war against Russia. He responded twice that he wants it to end and that no one should die. Harris, in turn, stated that Trump would simply surrender Ukraine within 24 hours of becoming president.
Later, Trump publicly promised to “exit” the war in Ukraine, as he believes Washington is “stuck” in it. “We need to get out. Biden says, ‘We won’t leave until we win.’ What happens if they don’t win?” — said the Republican.
