Since the onset of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, President Volodymyr Zelensky has undergone significant changes both in appearance and leadership style. Before the aggressor country attacked our nation, the head of state was often seen in formal suits, white shirts, and ties.
The president has shifted to a more practical and military-inspired wardrobe, favoring t-shirts, sweatshirts, and khaki jackets. However, Zelensky avoids wearing military uniforms.
Prior to February 24, 2022, the president of Ukraine primarily appeared in public in classic suits, maintaining a traditional political image. However, from the very first days of the war, his style changed drastically – Zelensky abandoned formal dress codes and began wearing military-style clothing and comfortable khaki t-shirts.
This transformation became not just a change in style but a powerful symbol of unity with the Ukrainian military. Zelensky has repeatedly emphasized that he remains in Kyiv alongside the people, and his appearance without a tie and business suit only reinforces this message.
Over the three years of war, Zelensky's face has taken on a more stern and haggard look. Noticeable wrinkles on his forehead and around his eyes have deepened. The president has also developed dark circles under his eyes, indicating constant fatigue and lack of sleep. While he was always clean-shaven before the war, he now consistently sports a short beard and stubble.
At the beginning of his presidential term, Zelensky delivered soft, diplomatic speeches. He sought to avoid conflicts and find compromises. However, the war has shifted his rhetoric – it has become clear, decisive, and uncompromising.
At the start of the full-scale invasion, the president's speeches became sharper — he began urging the entire world to supply weapons and strengthen sanctions against Russia. Nowadays, Zelensky's statements are more emotional than they were before, filled with facts and sometimes even profanity.
The president has noticeably changed on an emotional level as well. His face has become more serious, he smiles less often, and there seems to be a sense of fatigue and deep concentration in his eyes.
However, despite his exhaustion, the president continues to work in an extremely demanding mode and does not allow himself to show weakness. His composure and determination have become important for Ukrainians, as many look to him as a role model.
Previously, Telegraf reported why Zelensky does not wear military uniforms during the war. He has become the first president to reject conservative styles and elaborate classic suits.
