The agency Reuters has compiled reactions and reviews from world politicians.
U.S. President Donald Trump believes that these elections are a great day for Germany. In his view, "like the U.S., the people of Germany are tired of the senseless agenda, particularly regarding energy and immigration, that has prevailed for so many years. This is a wonderful day for Germany."
The head of the Israeli government, Benjamin Netanyahu, welcome the potential future Chancellor Friedrich Merz and the CDU/CSU party. Israel hopes for further strengthening of the partnership.
"Congratulations to Friedrich Merz and the CDU/CSU on their clear victory in today's elections. I look forward to close cooperation with your future government to further strengthen the partnership between our two countries," noted Netanyahu.
While the Israeli Prime Minister spoke about cooperation, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, of course, is concerned about Europe's defense. He emphasized the increase in defense budgets in his greeting.
"Congratulations to Friedrich Merz on today's election victory in Germany.
I eagerly anticipate collaborating with you at this crucial moment for our collective security. It is vital for Europe to increase defense spending, and your leadership will be key," stated Rutte.
The head of the Greek government, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, congratulated the leader of the CDU/CSU on social media X and expressed confidence that he would become the next Chancellor after Olaf Scholz's political force lost the elections.
"A decisive victory for our political family, for Germany, and for Europe. Congratulations to Friedrich Merz! One thing is clear: you will be the next Chancellor of Germany," wrote the Greek Prime Minister.
The Prime Minister of the Czech Republic, Petr Fiala, also congratulated Merz on his victory and emphasized the need to deepen Czech-German cooperation.
"Congratulations to Friedrich Merz and the CDU/CSU on their election victory in Germany. I wish you much strength and success in forming the federal government. I look forward to further deepening Czech-German cooperation and working together for a stronger Europe," Fiala wrote on social media X.
Following a decent preliminary result for the far-right AfD party, their Austrian "colleagues" reacted optimistically. The leader of Austria's far-right Freedom Party recalled Islamic terror, climate communism, and illegal immigration.
"As of today, there is a gaping hole in the firewall of the system parties, which is actually a wall of fear against the will of the people and democratic changes driven by the hopes of those tired of guardianship, illegal mass immigration, Islamist terror, and the security chaos that results from this, climate communism, and the destruction of prosperity. Today, the gentle, soothing wind of freedom from 1989 is blowing through Berlin and the entire Federal Republic," he stated.
Matteo Salvini commented on the success of the AfD party, which managed to double its votes "despite all attacks."
"Change is winning in Germany! The AfD doubles its votes despite attacks and lies from the left: stop illegal immigration and Islamic fanaticism, enough of eco-madness, prioritize peace and jobs, Europe must be radically changed. Well done (co-chair of AfD) Alice Weidel, keep it up!" declared Salvini.
It is worth noting that after the likely defeat based on exit polls, Scholz delivered a speech. He congratulated Merz and expressed concern about Alice Weidel's high ratings, who supports Russia.
We also reported that Merz is known for his support of Ukraine and, in autumn 2024, called on the German government to provide Taurus missiles.
