This is mentioned in a letter from Merezhko to the Nobel Committee, which was reviewed by the Kyiv Independent.

In his letter, Merezhko noted that Trump could assist Ukraine in achieving “a fair, comprehensive, and sustainable peace based on the UN Charter and principles of international law”.

The deputy also expressed hope that Trump, in his efforts to end the war, would pursue solutions that preserve Ukraine's territorial integrity, respect its sovereignty, and avoid the use of force.

“I am convinced that Trump has made a significant contribution to peace worldwide and that he can contribute even more in the future,” Merezhko emphasized in his address.

In a comment to the Kyiv Independent, the deputy explained his motivation for sending this appeal by stating that he wants to engage Trump, “to help Ukraine survive.”

“Trump also laid the groundwork for today’s international coalition supporting Ukraine, demonstrating global leadership in supplying weapons to counter the brutal and illegal aggressive war by Russia,” the deputy highlighted.

Trump and Ukraine

The position of Republican Donald Trump and his team regarding Ukraine remains ambiguous. During his campaign, Donald Trump repeatedly claimed that he would “end the war” if re-elected, without revealing how he would do so.

He asserted that he could stop the war in 24 hours, particularly due to his good relationships with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Russian leader Vladimir Putin.

At the same time, Trump threatened to halt financial aid to Ukraine and “withdraw” from the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

In debates with Joe Biden on June 28, he called Putin's demands for the withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from occupied regions and Ukraine's refusal to join NATO “unacceptable.” James DeVance, whom Trump selected as his vice-presidential candidate, expressed the opposite opinion, suggesting a freeze on hostilities along the current front line and Ukraine's withdrawal from NATO.

According to media reports, Trump’s advisors presented a plan stating that if he is re-elected, he would provide Ukraine with additional military assistance only if Kyiv agrees to negotiate with Moscow.

After Trump’s victory, another plan proposed by his advisors surfaced. It stipulates that Kyiv would promise not to join NATO for at least 20 years, while the US would continue to send weapons to Ukraine in exchange. Russia and Ukraine would supposedly agree to a demilitarized zone of over 1200 km.

It remains unclear which of these strategies Trump will adhere to and whether he will implement any of them at all.
