He mentioned this in an interview with American journalist Megyn Kelly.
“The existing dishonesty lies in the fact that we somehow allowed people to believe that Ukraine could not only defeat Russia but also destroy it, pushing them back to how the world looked in 2012 or 2014,” Rubio stated.
According to him, this ultimately led to funding a “deadlock” over the past year and a half.
“Meanwhile, they are being pushed back 100 years. Their energy system is being destroyed. Someone will have to pay for all this reconstruction afterward, and you know how many Ukrainians have left Ukraine, living now in other countries; they may never return. This is their future, and it is at risk,” Rubio said.
He emphasized that Donald Trump’s position is that this is a “protracted conflict” and should be resolved through negotiations. Rubio reiterated his statement that both sides will have to make concessions.
“This will require tough diplomacy, as we used to do in the world in the past, and we will be realistic about it, but both sides must give something during the negotiations,” the Secretary of State added.
Recall that Rubio has stated that the Trump administration aims not only for the end of the Russia-Ukraine war but also to ensure that it does not happen again in 2-4 years.
Earlier, the special envoy of the elected U.S. president for Ukraine, Keith Kellogg, stated that he aims to find a resolution regarding the war within 100 days after Trump’s inauguration.
Bloomberg, citing sources, reported that during any possible negotiations with Donald Trump, Russian President Vladimir Putin will insist that Ukraine become a neutral state, and that the occupied territories remain with Russia.
