The Polish Foreign Minister revealed how Trump played a role in persuading Orbán not to obstruct sanctions against Russia.

Sikorski's opinion is mentioned by RMF24.

He believes that Budapest lifted its veto following statements from Trump, who labeled Russian leader Vladimir Putin as an aggressor and threatened Russia with sanctions if it did not agree to peace negotiations.

According to Sikorski, this was Trump's first clear stance on the war in Ukraine, which prompted Hungary to change its position.

"I think President Trump helped here," said the Polish minister.

It’s worth noting that the day before, EU foreign ministers agreed to extend sanctions against Russia for another six months due to its invasion of Ukraine.

Hungary opposed this. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban stated that Brussels should adapt to the "new situation" and lift sanctions against Russia. He also mentioned that if Ukraine wants the extension of European sanctions, it must resume the transit of Russian gas.

Additionally, the Hungarian Prime Minister argued that anti-Russian restrictions did not stop the war and did not hinder the Russian economy.

However, in the end, Budapest agreed not to block the extension of sanctions, but the EU must issue a statement that it will take Hungary's concerns about "energy security" into account in light of the halted transit of Russian gas through Ukraine.
