U.S. plane crash, shelling in Sumy, and aid from Sweden: key highlights from January 30.

Air Crash in the USA

At approximately 21:00 on January 29 (around 04:00 on January 30 in Kyiv), a Bombardier CRJ700 PSA aircraft from American Airlines collided in mid-air with a Sikorsky H-60 helicopter.

The collision occurred while the plane was approaching the runway at Reagan National Airport, near Washington. As a result of the crash, the aircraft fell into the Potomac River.

It is known that the plane was on a flight from Wichita, Kansas. There were 64 people on board, while the helicopter had three military personnel conducting a training flight. All passengers on the plane perished.

According to Russian official sources, among the passengers were two former Russian figure skaters — Evgenia Shishkova and Vadim Naumov, who were returning from the U.S. Figure Skating Championships.

Shelled Areas in Sumy and Kramatorsk

On the night of January 30, Russian forces attacked Sumy with Shahed drones. One of the drones struck a residential high-rise building. As a result of the attack, 9 people lost their lives.

Preliminary reports indicate that 9 apartments and 12 balconies were destroyed due to the assault. Electricity, water, and heating services were shut off in the building where the strike occurred. Additionally, one stairwell has no gas supply.

During the day, the occupiers targeted Kramatorsk. The historical buildings were caught in the enemy fire. As a result of the attack, 13 individuals sustained injuries.

Assistance from Sweden

Sweden announced a new military aid package for Ukraine worth $1.2 billion. Ukraine will receive, among other things:

  • 16 combat boats;
  • 1 million rounds of 12.7 mm ammunition;
  • 146 trucks;
  • 1500 TOW anti-tank systems;
  • 200 AT4 grenade launchers.

Minute of Silence in Kyiv

In Kyiv, the city council approved recommendations for conducting a daily nationwide minute of silence. Specifically, announcements for the start of the minute of silence will be made in public transport and through alert systems on Khreshchatyk and Independence Square.

Information about the minute of silence will also be provided via the "Kyiv Digital" mobile app and on advertising billboards. The "Kyiv" TV channel and "Kyiv FM" radio station will continue to broadcast the minute of silence live.

Ukrainian Arrested in Slovakia

The police in Slovakia arrested a citizen of Ukraine suspected of allegedly preparing a coup in the country.

They intend to deport him; however, the head of the Slovak police, Jana Maškarová, was unable to confirm whether the detained individual is on an international wanted list or if he acted in concert with anyone.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that they are aware of the incident involving the arrest of the Ukrainian citizen in Slovakia and emphasized that they are keeping the situation under special control.

Investigation Department Established in the 155 Brigade

The new commander of the 155th Separate Mechanized Brigade named after Anna of Kyiv, from where many soldiers were deployed to the SOCH, along with his deputies, established an investigation department. This department includes representatives from each battalion that suffered losses.

Military ombudsman Olga Reshetilova stated that investigators are effectively reconstructing the events minute by minute during which communication with the soldiers was lost. They are also determining what measures were taken for evacuation and analyzing intelligence reports to understand what might have happened to the missing comrades.
