This is reported by the public broadcaster MDR.
The incident occurred on the evening of December 20 near the town hall. The spokesperson for the government of Saxony-Anhalt, Matthias Schuppe, confirmed that it was an attack. According to him, the suspected driver of the car, who deliberately drove into the crowd, has been detained.
Updated at 1:31. The head of the Saxony-Anhalt government, Reiner Haseloff, reported two fatalities — an adult and a child. A 50-year-old doctor from Saudi Arabia, who has been living in Germany since 2006, is suspected in the attack. The number of injured individuals has reached nearly 70, with 15 in serious condition.
A police representative stated that it is still unclear whether the perpetrator had accomplices. The police have also cordoned off the surrounding area, as they believe there may be an explosive device in the suspect's vehicle. This information has not been confirmed.
Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz noted that information from Magdeburg "indicates something bad."
On platform X, a video was posted showing a car speeding between tents, knocking people down.
It is worth recalling that a similar incident occurred in Germany in 2016. At that time, a truck stolen from a Polish driver drove into a crowd at a Christmas market in Berlin. As a result of the attack, 12 people were killed, and over 50 were injured. The perpetrator was Anis Amri — a migrant from Tunisia with links to radical Islamist groups.
