Waltz serves in the House of Representatives as a congressman from Florida. He is part of a working group focused on China, which coordinates U.S. policy regarding competition with China.
Waltz has openly supported Trump in previous years, and in May he was one of the few U.S. lawmakers who attended the court hearing regarding Trump's "hush money" case. He has criticized the current U.S. President Joe Biden, particularly for the troop withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021.
He praised Trump for compelling NATO allies to increase their defense spending. However, unlike Trump, he did not advocate for the U.S. to leave the Alliance.
Regarding Ukraine, Waltz has gradually shifted his stance. In 2022, he urged the Biden administration to provide more weapons to Kyiv. But last year, he wrote an article for Fox News stating that the “era of blank checks for Ukraine from Congress is over,” and called on Europe to do more to ensure collective defense.
“Stopping Russia before it drags NATO, and thus the U.S., into war is the right move. But the burden cannot continue to rest solely on the shoulders of the American people, especially while Western Europe is shirking its responsibilities,” he said.
Just last month, the congressman stated the need to reassess U.S. goals in Ukraine in favor of the Pacific region, and he referred to Trump's promise to negotiate between Ukraine and Russia as “perfectly reasonable.”
If Russian leader Vladimir Putin refuses to negotiate, Waltz believes the U.S. has “leverage—such as lifting restrictions on long-range weapons that we have provided to Ukraine as well.”
As for the Secretary of State position, Trump may still change his mind about Marco Rubio, as he remains supportive of other candidates. Rubio had previously criticized Trump and was even his opponent for the Republican presidential nomination in 2016.
However, during this election campaign, he has become closer to Trump—who even considered offering him the vice presidency instead of J.D. Vance.
Regarding assistance to Ukraine, Rubio initially supported aid to Ukraine, but in recent months he has begun to change his stance, advocating for a swift end to the conflict. Specifically, he stated that the U.S. is “funding a war that has reached a stalemate” and that it will take “100 years” to rebuild Ukraine.
