This is reported by the Washington Post, citing its own sources.
On Friday, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio released a statement saying that Washington "has proposed a simple historical resolution to the UN" and urged other countries around the world to support it.
"By supporting this resolution, we affirm that this conflict is horrific, that the UN can help put an end to it, and that peace is possible. We firmly believe that the time has come to commit to ending the war." the statement reads.
However, WP notes that in Kyiv, this initiative was perceived as an attempt to limit any expression of accountability for Russia regarding the war. The statement was also viewed as "close to pro-Russian" and was rejected.
It should be noted that earlier, the U.S. "made it clear" that they might halt international efforts to hold Russia accountable for war crimes committed in Ukraine, particularly withdrawing from the establishment of a special tribunal concerning the Russian Federation.
