Hunted in the reserve. A man was fined a hefty sum for killing a deer.

The court in the Ivano-Frankivsk region has made a ruling in the case of a man who shot a deer within the territory of the research natural reserve "Black Forest," which is a zoological sanctuary near the village of Nivochin in the Starobogorodchany territorial community of the Ivano-Frankivsk district. The illegal hunter will have to pay a substantial compensation.

According to information from the public register of court decisions, the defendant shot the European deer with his own hunting rifle "MP-43" Win, for which he holds the appropriate permit. The deer died, and the man dismembered the carcass and took it home to the village of Zavoy in the Kalush district of Ivano-Frankivsk region.

The damage caused to the environment by the man is estimated at 478,888 hryvnias, which equals 316.3 non-taxable minimums of citizen income. The actions of the illegal hunter were classified under part 1 of the article concerning other territories and objects of the natural reserve fund.

The affected party — the "Specialized Forestry and Hunting Research Natural Reserve 'Black Forest'" — filed a civil lawsuit seeking compensation of 478,888.15 hryvnias for property damage from the deer killer. The defendant admitted his guilt in court and acknowledged the civil claim of the victim.

He recounted that he killed the deer with the first shot. After that, he spent two hours dissecting the animal's body into four parts. Then, he carried the parts to his car one by one and drove them home. Later that evening, the police arrived at his home and conducted a search, seizing the remains of the deer.

Although the man fully acknowledged the civil claim for damages to the hunting economy in the amount of 478,888 hryvnias and the plaintiff’s legal costs, he was unable to pay them. The hunter explained that he is currently unemployed and lacks the financial means to provide compensation. However, he stated that he plans to do so in the future. He added that he sincerely regrets his actions and requested not to be punished harshly.

The court considered his remorse and cooperation with the investigation as mitigating circumstances. It was also taken into account that the man had no prior convictions and has two minor children to support.

"Taking into account the personality of the accused, who is unemployed, married, has two dependent minor children, has no prior convictions, and considering the nature and severity of the committed criminal offense, the court concludes that the appropriate measure for the rehabilitation of the accused and prevention of further offenses should be criminal punishment in the form of probation supervision with the imposition of obligations including employment, contacting the state employment service, and fulfilling the activities outlined in the probation program. The civil claim for the recovery of property damage caused by the criminal offense in the amount of 478,888.15 hryvnias is fully granted by the court", — states the court's decision.

During the searches, authorities found not only the skull with antlers of the killed deer but also remains of other animals. He stored an additional 12 deer skulls with antlers and 13 roe deer skulls with antlers.
