During a meeting of diplomats in Saudi Arabia, Baerbock stated that Chancellor Olaf Scholz's blockage of the decision to provide Ukraine with a new aid package worth 3 billion euros affects Germany's security.
According to her, due to the blockage of aid, Ukraine "will be less capable of defending itself, and therefore less able to defend us."
Baerbock believes that military support for Ukraine is "the best defense of our security in Europe and our security in Germany."
As Spiegel writes, a dispute has allegedly arisen within the German government regarding an additional arms package for Ukraine amounting to approximately 3 billion euros. The package was formulated by Baerbock and Defense Minister Boris Pistorius.
This arms package includes three batteries of the IRIS-T air defense system with munitions, missiles for the Patriot air defense system, ten wheeled howitzers, and artillery ammunition.
However, sources from the publication assure that Scholz, as a candidate for chancellor, does not want to announce further arms supplies to Ukraine in the midst of the election campaign, in order to avoid alienating potential voters.
On December 16, the Bundestag declared a vote of no confidence in Olaf Scholz's government. The current chancellor brought this issue before parliament following the collapse of the "traffic light coalition". In a named vote, the majority of deputies expressed their lack of confidence in him.
After this, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier announced the dissolution of parliament and the holding of early elections, which will take place on February 23. Until then, Scholz will remain the interim leader until a new government is formed.
